Overview: Deschutes County Transportation Coordination

As Central Oregon faces rapid growth, the need for transportation services within and among communities increases proportionately. This necessity includes not only the amount of transportation available but also options to meet a wide variety of needs including those of seniors, people with disabilities, and other residents without the means of personal transportation. This planning process will pull together stakeholders representing all elements of the Deschutes County population to discuss transportation issues and collectively arrive at solutions using existing transportation services that the entire stakeholder group can support.

The project will be coordinated by a leadership team made up of the Central Oregon Partnership (through the Community Action Teams), Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC), and Oregon Solutions staff. The greater project team will include representatives from each of the local governments and unincorporated communities in Deschutes County, as well as representatives from social services, non-profit organizations, state government, private business, existing transportation providers, and potential transportation users.

The following goals will be established through a series of eight to ten stakeholder meetings along with supportive work from the leadership team and other stakeholders involved in specialized committees:

1. Identify present and future transportation needs in Deschutes County.
2. Develop a shared vision for the ideal transportation system for Deschutes County.
3. Identify steps to work toward the shared vision, including coordination of existing resources and services as well as identifying potential future projects.
4. Prioritize coordination initiatives based on the needs that would be met and the potential for success.
5. Implement top priority coordination projects.
