North Portland Diesel Emissions Reduction

June 22, 2006 project celebration at Embassy Suites

Dr. Algie Gatewood, project co-convener said it was a great day for the neighborhood.

"To voluntarily reduce emissions in north Portland is a significant and historical event. Because as we make this change our families, our communities, our children, our grandchildren and for many generations to come the benefits will be felt." -Dr. Gatewood, Portland Community College, Cascade Campus

Dr. Gatewood and Carl Talton, Portland Family of Funds were appointed by Governor Kulongoski to convene this project, sponsored by Oregon Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Quality to reduce the near term diesel pollution load in North Portland. The Oregon Solutions team of businesses, nonprofits and agencies agreed to participate in several existing voluntary and coordinated efforts such as the use of cleaner fuels, add-on control devices and idle reduction strategies in advance of the national mandates.

Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, along with private sector representatives, ODOT, DEQ, EJAG spoke about this exciting project. For more information about this Oregon Solutions project, see the North Portland Diesel Emissions Reduction page on our site.

Willamette Falls Locks

At the annual Lock Fest Celebration in West Linn on May 20, a Declaration of Cooperation was signed, and more than 25 public- and private-sector partners celebrated the success of the first phase of the Willamette Falls Locks project. The Oregon Solutions process led to $420,000 from 12 different partners - including $318,300 from The Oregon Transportation Commission - to keep the locks open for two more years, while a long term solution for funding and operating the locks is found.

See http://www.willamettefalls.org/lockfest for more information about the signing of the Oregon Solutions Declaration of Cooperation in West Linn.

Cardwell Hill Regional Conservation Planning Strategy

Commissioner Annabelle Jaramillo, Benton County, is the convener of this cooperative, voluntary approach to regional landscape-scale restoration and management. This Oregon Solutions project is an effort spurred by a set of common goals generated by landowners and the Marys River Watershed Council, in the interests of protecting and restoring habitat and water resources in the region.

The OS Team signed a Declaration of Cooperation on May 19th. See our Cardwell Hill Regional Conservation Planning Strategy page for more information about this project.

OSARC Project Receives Award

This Oregon Solutions project received the Governor's Fund for the Environment Award for outstanding work in conservation in the Willamette Valley. The grant funds will be used for several OSARC pilot projects that will be launched with NORPAC Food, Inc., to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable management practices.

Governor Kulongoski's press release is available at http://governor.oregon.gov/Gov/p2006/press_041906.shtml.

The Center will create an opportunity for Oregon growers to voluntarily make changes in their practices for greater stewardship. OSARC will be a comprehensive and practical tool to help farmers adapt stewardship practices that will have many benefits to Oregonians, including improving the health of the Willamette River.
